Astronomy at Taj conference helps realize dreams for India's young scholars and Western students

Shantanu Basu

Past Chair of Physics and Astronomy Shantanu Basu had a dream.  He wanted to not only allow his students to broaden their horizons by world travel, but he was also looking for a way to help India's growing population of young scholars see that they too could dream of doing science at an international level.

Prof. Basu and his graduate students organized a winter school and international conference near the famous Taj Mahal in India on February 15-19,2016. This educational, research, and cultural event was aptly named 'Astronomy at Taj'. It included public and panel discussions that were attended byhundreds of high school students and members of the general public.

An enthusiastic contingent of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty from Western made the trip to India.
