The 75th Anniversary of Cronyn Observatory

The 75th anniversary of The Hume Cronyn Memorial Observatory at Western University, London, Canada

Join us on October 24th and 25th as the Hume Cronyn Memorial Observatory celebrates its 75th anniversary!

The observatory was presented to the University by Mrs. Francis Amelia Cronyn (ne Francis Amelia Labatt) in memory of her husband Hume Blake Cronyn, and opened its doors to the public on October 25th, 1940. It was intended to be a source of instruction and inspiration to the students and faculty of Western, to provide a stimulus for the work of the local Astronomical Society, and to bring pleasure and benefit to those citizens of the community who are interested in astronomy. 75 years later, we open the doors once more for an evening (and an afternoon!) of astronomy, but this time with a historical touch to it.

For the anniversary weekend, we will proudly display historical artefacts, instruments and photographs related to the Observatory, along with a narrative of some of the Observatory's highlights. Just as was the case in 1940, we will also have the original Dresden meteorite on display. This celebration would not be complete without looking at the celestial wonders, and weather permitting, we will train our telescopes to the heavens both on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon (to look at the Sun with our special Solar Telescope). Details are in the program below.

This 75th birthday celebration is presented by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, its Exploring the Stars program, and the London Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
