Egg Relay
Objective To measure the volume of an egg.
Participants: Teams of N people
Materials Measuring cups, buckets of water, eggs, obstacle course, paper and pencil, stop watch.
  1. The relay teams run a preset course relaying an egg.
  2. The first person in the team relays an egg a distance of 20 m to the second person (the first person may run with the egg, throw it, roll it etc...). If the egg is broken, it must be replaced by an unbroken egg and a 10 second time penalty is given.
  3. The second person uses a measuring cup and water to determine the volume of the egg. The individual must fill the cup to a level that allows him/her to completely submerge the egg without causing the water to spill over the mouth of the cup.
  4. The individual subtracts the initial water level from the new water level to determine the egg's volume. The volume is written on a piece of paper and the paper is folded twice.
  5. The egg and folded slip of paper is given to the third person (waiting beside the measurement station) who runs the obstacle course and delivers the egg and paper to the fourth person.
  6. The fourth person, waiting at the second measurement station, repeats the volume measurement procedure. The volume is written on the outside of the folded paper. Note: The fourth person is not allowed to look at the first measurement noted inside the paper.
  7. The fifth person, waiting beside the second measurement station, takes the egg and paper and runs 20 m to the last station. The person looks at both volume measurements and averages the two values.
  8. He/she then presents the average volume and the egg to the judge. The timer notes the team's relay time.
  1. The judge measures the volume of the egg, and notes the percent difference (judge's value minus team's value, divided by the judge's value, then multiplied by 100) between his or her measurement and the relay team's measurement.
  2. The total possible score is 100 points.
  3. Fifty points are awarded to the team with the best relay time, with each subsequent team losing 2 points from this 50 points for every second it is behind the fastest team.
  4. In addition, 50 points are awarded to the team with the lowest percent difference between their measured volume and the volume measured by the judge.
  5. Each subsequent team loses 2 points from this SO points for every percent that they are below the best team's percent difference.
