On A Small Scale
Objective To construct a spring-type scale
Purpose To demonstrate that the length of stretched material is proportional to the mass suspended from it. In this way, we can see how elasticity can be used for measurement.
Participants Any number of individuals or teams.
Materials two rulers or pieces of wood of the same size; a rubber band; thumb tacks; paper clips; a set of masses.
Procedure Construct a scale using only the materials provided.
Judging The scale that can suspend the greatest mass is the winner.
