Balloon Powered Automobile
Objective To design and construct a wheeled vehicle that is to be propelled by a balloon.
Purpose To develop knowledge of mechanical systems.
Participants Teams of up to four.
Materials Balloon. The vehicle will be assembled before the race -(maximum dimensions may be 30 cm X 20 cm X 10 cm) and may contain any materials the team wishes to use.
  1. The constructed vehicle must ride on wheels.
  2. The car must be propelled by an air filled balloon. No other means of propulsion may be used.
  3. The distance to be covered by the propelled car will be 10 meters and the time will be recorded.
  4. Each team or individual will have 3 runs. The shortest of the three runs will be used.
Judging The winner of this event will be the individual or team who builds a car that travels the 10 meters in the shortest time.
