Hot Water Heater
Objective To construct a solar water heater that will heat 4 litres of water to a predetermined temperature in the shortest time.
Purpose To investigate solar energy.
Participants Teams of up to four.
Materials Plywood - no bigger than 35 cm X 35 cm X 18 cm, copper tubing, glass, aluminum foil, flat black paint, dowel rods.
  1. Students may use any or all the materials and may vary the quantities.
  2. Students must devise a pumping mechanism that circulates the water from the reservoir efficiently.
  3. No commercial solar materials will be allowed.
  4. No hazardous chemicals may be used to raise the water temperature.
Judging The winner will be the team or individual who raises the water temperature 10 degrees Celcius in the shortest time.
