Tensile Strength Test
Objective To design a device that will support a mass. Thus showing the effect of gravity upon a mass.
Purpose To re-inforce the concepts of mass, gravity and weight.
Participants Teams of two or three.
Materials Rubber bands, short wooden dowels, paper clips, masking tape, "C" clamps, weights, one sheet of paper 21.5 cm x 28 cm.
Rules
  1. Contestants have one hour to assemble the device.
  2. Contestants will put a mass on their device and increase the mass until it is holding the maximum. As the maximum nears, weights will be added in 1 kg increments until the device breaks.
  3. Once the device has broken, it is disqualified.
Judging The device holding the greatest mass is the winning device.
