Physics and Astronomy

Jam Session
Objective Each team uses two musical instruments which have been constructed in a previous session to play a one octave scale. The instruments must both be tuned to a standard.
Purpose To learn some physics of sound.
Participants Teams of up to four.
Materials Two instruments and an audio signal generator or piano.
Rules Each instrument is tuned to the standard and then the instruments play a scale together. An optional part of the event is that the instruments may play a tune.

Judging Criteria:

  1. Originality and quality of instrumentation.
  2. Pitch perfection.
  3. Clarity of sound.
  4. Cohesiveness of playing (teamwork).

Top teams score 100. Runners-up earn a proportional percentage of 100% based on their actual score.
