A combination of two optical microscopy images of frozen poly(vinyl alcohol) solution. The sample was frozen on the microscope stage and nucleation of ice occurred at the centre of the image. The first image was of the transmitted light and is shown in red. The second image used differential interference contrast and is shown in green. Both images are from the same 1.7 micron by 1.3 micron area of the sample.
